It’s quick and easy, and you can see your project on Google Earth!
Help to complete the Map
We need to map protected area boundaries, and the tracks and tourist infrastructure inside them. Can you help us get any of this data?
It doesn’t need to be a lot to be useful: in some places just a few accurate tracks will enable us to lift a lot more valuable data off satellite photos.
Get in touch if you have any ideas for us on finding and gathering existing data. Here are a few specific ideas:
Do you have GPS Tracks and Waypoints from African Protected Areas?
Do you have any GPS data that can be added to the Protected Areas dataset? We welcome any submissions, small or large and we can promise that if our technical team can use them they will – and they will end up on Google Earth, putting Africa on the map.
Who do you know in the field? We need contacts
Do you know people in the field who might already have data, or who are able to record some tracks and waypoints? Researchers, rangers, wildlife authorities, guides, 4×4 enthusiasts, overlanders, etc.
We won’t hassle anyone but if you can give us email addresses of anyone who might be able to help, it would be fantastic. There will be people out there sitting on fanatastic data they have collected themselves and others who could be doing it as part of their daily routine. There are lots of people who can make a wonderful contribution. In some cases we might be able to provide GPS equipment and training.
Protected Area Boundaries
Bizarrely, it is very difficult to map the boundaries of Protected Areas accurately.
Many are well documented but even so they are often not accurate enough to make good sense on a satellite image. For example, if a park boundary runs along a river, we will have to draw it off a satellite image to ensure a perfect fit when it is displayed on Google Earth.
If you have any maps which show detailed boundaries of Protected Areas – especially the more obscure ones, we would love to see them. Obviously we are working with wildlife authorities on this but it si not always easy to get hold of information in the right format and things change over time. The more background we have the better the end result will be.
Since we will be working off satellite images, as well as on the ground, the best maps are those which show conservation area boundaries in relation to identifiable geographical features like a rivers, mountains or coastlines.
Add a picture
Can you help us make the layer more attractive with your pictures? Below is a list of pictures we’re still needing. If you can help us with any of these, please get in contact
